Manila, Philippines - The Department of Justice (DOJ) is proud to announce the ceremonial launching of its DOJ Manual of Writing Style, a comprehensive guide aimed at promoting uniformity, clarity, and precision in legal writing across all levels of the department. The launch event, held yesterday at the Admiral Hotel Manila, Grand Harbour Ballroom, marks a significant step towards enhancing the professionalism and efficiency of legal writing in the department.
The DOJ Manual of Writing Style is designed to set standards for writing and communication, ensuring that all legal instruments, pleadings, and official correspondences follow a coherent and uniform structure. The initiative reflects the DOJ's ongoing commitment to improving public service by upholding high standards in the administration of justice.
The event featured a keynote address by the Secretary of Justice, who highlighted the importance of consistent legal writing in achieving transparency and effective communication within the judicial system. Particular emphasis was placed on how this new standard will guide the drafting of pleadings, opinions, contracts, and other legal documents to avoid ambiguities and ensure clarity for all parties.
Secretary of Justice Jesus Crispin C. Remulla expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Our mission is not merely about winning cases or drafting flawless documents; it is about ensuring that the principles of justice permeate every aspect of our work, from protecting the rights of individuals to ensuring that justice is served in every corner of our society. This manual is more than just a reference; it is a crucial tool that shall ensure our written communication remains clear, cohesive, and consistent across the department.
Key DOJ officials, including undersecretaries, assistant secretaries, and representatives from the European Union-Governance in Justice II Programme (EU-GOJUST), as well as its team leader Christian Eldon, attended the ceremonial launch. GOJUST is the DOJ's development partner for this project. The manual was developed through the hard work of the department's finest legal minds and experienced prosecutors. It provides clear guidelines on grammar, formatting, tone, and the use of gender-sensitive language, aligning the department's writing style with international best practices.
In his address, the Secretary of Justice also emphasized the broader vision behind the project: "This manual is just one part of our broader commitment to delivering "Real Justice in Real Time." Through clear and effective communication, we are taking steps towards restoring public trust and improving the delivery of justice."
The DOJ Manual of Writing Style will be disseminated to all DOJ offices nationwide and made accessible online to ensure all DOJ personnel, including regional offices, will benefit from the standardized guidance.
This launch is just the beginning of the DOJ's efforts to streamline and enhance its internal and external communications. A Department Circular will be issued to promote and ensure the application of the manual's guidelines to all DOJ employees.
